New Zeiss Lenses for Canon & Nikon DSLRS

Zeiss has announced a new range of lenses specifically for high-resolution DSLRs. The Zeiss Milvus family includes six lenses for Canon EF and Nikon F cameras, including a pair of macro lenses.

The lenses are all manual focus only, but feature communication between lens and camera body. Zeiss has also made focusing rings with a long throw to make precise manual focusing easier, and the optics are designed to produce even performance from corner to corner.

Pricing for the six lenses will be:

  • Zeiss Milvus 2.8/21 $1843
  • Zeiss Milvus 2/35 $1177
  • Zeiss Milvus 1.4/50 $1199
  • Zeiss Milvus 1.4/85 $1799
  • Zeiss Milvus 2/50M $1283
  • Zeiss Milvus 2/100M $1843

The 2/50M and 2/100M are both macro lenses with 1:2 image ratio at closest focus.

A Unique Electronic Display in the New ZEISS Batis

ZEISS now has two new lenses that use a unique electronic display to show the focus distance and depth of field. The Batis 25mm f2.0 and the Batis 85mm f1.8 autofocus lenses were developed especially for mirrorless full-frame system cameras by Sony.

With just a glance at the innovative OLED display on top of the lens, one can now see the focus distance and range of depth of field. (Depth of field describes the sharp focus range and depends on a range of factors including the focus distance, the set aperture and the image sensor of the camera type used.)

Depending on the focus distance, one of the following two display modes will be shown.

Close-up situations:

The display shows the focus distance on the left hand side, and the depth of field on the right hand side. The latter displays the sharp focus range relating to the focus distance.

Long distance situations:

The focus distance is shown in the upper part of the display. Depth of field values are shown in the display corners in the bottom left and right in absolute distance values relating to the distance from the camera system.

The ZEISS Batis autofocus lenses were developed especially for mirrorless full-frame system cameras by Sony. The lenses are fully compatible with all E-mount cameras and offer protection against dust and splashing water in addition to fast and easy autofocus. For creative work, the distance and depth of field can be read from the innovative OLED display. With the completely new lens design, the high-speed ZEISS Batis family offers perfect imaging performance.

ZEISS Batis 25mm f2.0 With a close focusing distance of just 7.9 inches and a fast maximum aperture of f2.0, the ZEISS Batis 25mm wide-angle lens is the perfect companion for shooting landscapes, architecture, street scenes and photojournalism.

ZEISS Batis 85mm f1.8 With a focal length of 85 mm, and a fast f1.8 maximum aperture, this lens is the perfect companion for portrait, event, and wedding photography. The built in optical image stabilization also allows for successful hand-held shooting even in poor light conditions.

New Firmware for ZEISS Touit Lenses

ZEISS released a new firmware update for the Touit 2.8/12 E and 1.8/32 E lenses providing support of phase detection autofocus and the fast hybrid autofocus of newer Sony E mount cameras. This new firmware must be uploaded to the lens at ZEISS’ facilities using specialized equipment. It is not possible to upload the firmware via the Sony camera body.
