RØDELink Digital Wireless Audio System

RØDELink Filmmaker kit

The Australian audio company RØDE Microphones has just announced multiple new products and categories at an exclusive event in San Diego. The most exciting is the RØDELink Digital Wireless System. A fully-digital wireless audio system, RØDELink utilizes a next-generation 2.4GHz, 128-bit encrypted digital transmission sent on two channels simultaneously, providing a high-resolution 24-bit/44.1k digital audio signal at a range of up to over 100 yards. The use of 2.4GHz means that the RØDELink should be able to work worldwide unlike the more expensive Sennheiser G3 and Sony UWP-D which work on different frequency bands in different countries due to different regulations.

The RØDELink system will consist of a number of receiver and transmitter options, and will be available in kits for specific audio needs across film, news gathering, presentation and stage use. The first of these to be released – The Filmmaker Kit (seen above), will consist of a beltpack transmitter, on-camera or beltpack receiver and a RØDE Lavalier microphone.

The RØDELink Filmmaker kit will be available in April 2015 at a price of $399.

Real or April Fools?

RØDE’s iXY stereo microphone for iOS devices was released in January, and has already gained critical praise from both musical and mainstream media, including a recent Red Dot product award.

The company is quickly emerging as the leader in microphones for Apple’s portable devices, and the i16 aims to consolidate this reputation.

RØDE has announced the i16, a surround sound microphone for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that combines sixteen discrete microphone capsules to capture the user’s surrounding audio environment in broadcast quality.

RØDE’s founder and president, Peter Freedman, explains: “When developing the iXY we were focussed on providing the ultimate in stereo audio capture for iOS devices. But during the project it became that there was a large proportion of the market who wanted to record in complete surround. We’ve taken that seriously and produced the i16.”

The new microphone uses RØDE’s own field recording app, RØDE Rec, to record the sixteen tracks simultaneously at quality up to 24-bit/96kHz.

At the heart of the i16 is an incredible sixteen individual gold-sputtered cardioid condenser capsules, which allows the user a high amount of freedom to record in either surround, stereo, mono, or anywhere in between.

“Once the user records the surrounding environment, software processing inside RØDE Rec will allow them to cancel background noise through phase manipulation of the other channels, working much in the same way as noise-cancelling headphones.” explained Mr Freedman. “In this way the i16 is even more effective at recording dialogue than a traditional shotgun microphone.”

Once the user records the surrounding environment they can then use that track to phase cancel any background noise, very much like noise-cancelling headphones. This results in highly intelligible dialogue and crystal-clear audio.

The i16 is available with both Apple Lightning (iPhone 5, iPad mini) and 30-pin connections. Both are shipping now, with a MSRP of US$399.

So what do you think? Real or April Fools Day Joke?

(Hint : RØDE announced this new product on March 31 – however RØDE is based in Austrailia – and at the time of this announcement, it was April Fools Day in Australia)

RØDE smartLav

The smartLav is a professional-grade wearable microphone designed for use in a wide range of film, television and broadcast scenarios, or wherever professional quality audio is required in a discreet, portable format without the complication and expense of additional wireless equipment. With the smartLav the user simply mounts the microphone on the talent, connects it to a smartphone or tablet headset jack and records via the RØDE Rec app for iOS, or any other audio app of their choice.

By employing a high quality omni-directional condenser capsule the smartLav picks up sound equally from all around the microphone, allowing for versatility when mounting and ensuring a high degree of user-friendly operation.

A foam pop shield is supplied to minimize wind noise and vocal plosives (hard ‘b’, ‘t’ and ‘p’ sounds), as well as a durable mounting clip with in-built cable management.

The smartLav is compatible with any audio app that accepts input from the headset connection, however it has been designed to pair perfectly with RØDE’s RØDE Rec app for Apple iOS devices. RØDE Rec turns the user’s iOS device into a fully-featured field recorder, with a wide range of equalization presets to suit various recording situations, in addition to professional editing functions and the ability to publish to SoundCloud and Dropbox direct from the app.

RØDE VideoMic

The RØDE VideoMic is a professional grade 1/2″ condenser shotgun microphone designed for use with consumer video cameras and personal audio recorders.

The integrated shock mounting system isolates the VideoMic capsule and electronics from its all-metal shoe mount, providing isolation from external physical factors that may cause unwanted rumble and vibrations in the microphone.

Its standard sized shoe mount also includes a 3/8″ thread in the base for easy mounting on a boom pole or stand. (note that cameras with proprietary sized mounts require an additional adaptor.)

Its super cardioid polar pattern is highly directional, focusing on the subject in front of the camera, and minimizing any surrounding sounds.

In addition to the microphone’s native 40Hz-20kHz response a selectable high-pass filter at 80Hz is available, which will prevent low end noise such as air conditioners and traffic from being recorded.

A -10dB and -20dB level attenuation (or PAD), selectable from inside the battery compartment, allows recording of loud sound sources, such as live music or motor sports.

The RØDE VideoMic directional on-camera microphone is covered by RØDE Microphones’ industry leading 10 year warranty.

RODE Mic for the iPhone

RØDE microphones just announced an interesting looking microphone for field recording using an iPhone or iPad.

The iXY is a plug in stereo microphone module that promises high quality recordings up to 24-bit/96kHz. Importantly for video shooters the accompanying RØDE Rec app that runs on the iPhone or iPad is capable of recording at a more video friendly 48kHz too – which should make for easier syncing in dual-system sound setups. Rode is pitching the iXY at DSLR shooters in particular because of its small form factor that should allow it together with an iPhone to be mounted easily on top of a camera. They also suggest feeding the headphone output of the iPhone or iPad to the camera to provide a scratch audio track.

Rode describes the iXY as a “matched pair of ½” cardioid condenser capsules, fixed in a perfect 90 degree ‘near-coincident’ alignment resulting in immersive and true-to-life stereo recordings, captured in incredibly high detail”.
