Please join us for a Camera West, hands-on, field workshop in and around the western movie set village of Pioneertown, 4 miles from Yucca Valley. There is an amazing variety of subject matter to photograph. We can explore black and white, panoramic, still life, landscape, and people photography. We will learn to manage color, light, mood, composition and design by increasing our visual awareness.

We will begin with a 1 PM seminar. There will be a staged gun fight at 2:30 PM followed by picture scouting and coached photography until a 4 PM progress review.  Free photo time continues until 7PM. Food and facilities are available.

Please RSVP soon. We are limited to only 10 participants. Cost is $195/person.

Please contact or call 760.992.5422.

Please join us at Camera West for a beginning photographer seminar dedicated to bringing a clear understanding of the digital cameras many options including menus, modes, lens choices, f stops, iso, histograms and assorted intimidating buttons. Each topic is illustrated with pictures resulting in understanding craft and moving toward pictures under your control. We will finish with a more tame camera. We will also look at editing software. Thank You

Thank you to Dan Cuny, Profoto’s Western Regional Sales Manager and all those who attended our Profoto off-camera flash demonstration at Camera West in Walnut Creek last night. Dan showed us the latest in Profoto’s off-camera flash system and participants were encouraged to try the various Profoto light shaping tools on model Puneet Gill.

Come see us at Camera West if interested in this revolutionary flash system.

Puneet Gill was our beautiful model for the event.

Today, January 15th is my last day at Camera West. I have decided to retire and move up to a small town in the Sierra foothills. It has always been my dream to retire in a small close-knit community, and the opportunity to do so at this time magically came together.

It has been a wonderful 5 years at Camera West. I want to thank Sean and Diana Cranor, owners of Camera West and Dan Leto my manager for taking the chance in hiring this San Francisco Chronicle photojournalist of 30 years but with zero sales experience. I have learned so much and I am forever grateful for the opportunity I was given.

I will continue to lead a few workshops and photo walks for Camera West. I will also contribute to this blog and our Camera West Walnut Creek Facebook page during this transition period.

My plans in retirement are to get out and shoot more – I’ve really missed that. I will also have plenty of time for hiking, biking, kayaking and taking road trips on my motorcycle. I’m already planning a year-round organic vegetable garden and to build a chicken coop for fresh organic eggs. Fun times ahead!

I can be reached by email at

Best regards,
Michael Maloney
