Thank You

Thank you to Dan Cuny, Profoto’s Western Regional Sales Manager and all those who attended our Profoto off-camera flash demonstration at Camera West in Walnut Creek last night. Dan showed us the latest in Profoto’s off-camera flash system and participants were encouraged to try the various Profoto light shaping tools on model Puneet Gill.

Come see us at Camera West if interested in this revolutionary flash system.

Puneet Gill was our beautiful model for the event.

Today, January 15th is my last day at Camera West. I have decided to retire and move up to a small town in the Sierra foothills. It has always been my dream to retire in a small close-knit community, and the opportunity to do so at this time magically came together.

It has been a wonderful 5 years at Camera West. I want to thank Sean and Diana Cranor, owners of Camera West and Dan Leto my manager for taking the chance in hiring this San Francisco Chronicle photojournalist of 30 years but with zero sales experience. I have learned so much and I am forever grateful for the opportunity I was given.

I will continue to lead a few workshops and photo walks for Camera West. I will also contribute to this blog and our Camera West Walnut Creek Facebook page during this transition period.

My plans in retirement are to get out and shoot more – I’ve really missed that. I will also have plenty of time for hiking, biking, kayaking and taking road trips on my motorcycle. I’m already planning a year-round organic vegetable garden and to build a chicken coop for fresh organic eggs. Fun times ahead!

I can be reached by email at

Best regards,
Michael Maloney

Cataract Creek Waterfalls Photo Walk

Take a hike with Michael from Camera West in Walnut Creek on this photo walk alongside beautiful Cataract Creek on the north slope of Mt Tamalpais in Marin County. This winter’s rains have provided plenty of water for tiny Cataract Creek producing a series of small waterfalls that drop through a forest canopy of redwood, Douglas fir, oak, and maple trees.

This photo walk is for photographers of all abilities. Only requirements are a camera that will allow you to manually set the shutter speed, and a sturdy tripod. Michael will show you how to best photograph moving water and offer some tips to get that silky smooth look to the water.

This photo walk is limited to just 12 photographers so sign up early!
