Sony A99

Nearly four years since Sony released its first full-frame DSLR – the A900, Sony has announced it’s successor – the SLT-A99. The A99 is based around Sony’s SLT design which uses an electronic viewfinder, rather than an optical one. Instead of using a traditional mirror, the A99 uses a fixed semi-transparent mirror which redirects light to a phase-detection autofocus sensor. This means live view and autofocus are always active.

Sony SLT-A99 key specifications:

24MP full-frame CMOS Sensor with phase detection AF
Fixed-mirror design SLT
2.4M dot OLED electronic viewfinder
ISO 100-25,600
AF Micro Adjust
Up to 6 frame-per-second continuous shooting with AF
A tilt/swivel 1.23m dot RGBW LCD screen
Microphone and headphone sockets
Built-in GPS

World’s First Full-Frame Compact Camera – Sony RX1

Photokina 2012: Sony announces the world’s first full-frame compact camera. The 24.3mp Sony RX1 with a Carl Zeiss 35/2 Sonnar is a pro-level compact camera weighs about 17 ounces and packs a full-frame sensor capable of ISO 25600 at 5 fps.

The Zeiss Sonnar is designed with 8 elements in 7 groups and contains 3 aspherical elements with a dedicated aperture ring and a leaf shutter for silent operation. The lens focuses to a close 24cm from the lens front. Slightly closer focus can be achieved by moving a ring around the lens to give a closer focus of 20cm from the sensor plane.

Many accessories will be available for the RX1, including an optical viewfinder (FDA-V1K), electronic viewfinder (FDA-EV1MK) and a thumb grip (TGA-1). All of the finder and grip accessories slide into the camera’s hotshoe. A metal lens hood (LHP-1) will also be available.

The current list price for the RX-1 is $2800.
